Taking pictures at night
The first thing you need to take good pictures at night is a tripod. At night you need to set a long-time exposure and the slightest vibration will blur the image.
If you don’t have the tripod just use any horizontal surface (fence, table, box, etc) (It is worse but it will still work). You can even use the vertical surface. Just lean your camera to it.
Whats more, use the automatic releaser, so you have time to fix the camera (10 seconds at least).
Other things you have to do manualy are exposure and ISO.
If you got yourself a good camera with big aperture set ISO on the low level. Bigger ISO rate will cause smudges that you would have to delete. Saving colors is an issue with low ISO, but your images will be clean and discrete. If you want to have good colors, take pictures right before dawn or after sunset.
Use of the polarizer filter.
Polarizer filter is a very useful addition to your camera. It reduces glares on the reflecting surfaces (glass, water, etc). In sunny days the best use of the filter can be made if you face it perpendicularly to the sun rays. If you face the sun or opposite there will be no use of the filter.
Key: polarizer filter
